VelociRaptor Watercooling?

Has anyone had any luck using watercooling with these?

I plan to put 4 in my PC4-1036BK and want to cool as much of my gear with water as possible.

Yes, I have had luck water cooling these. I have 4 300g Raptors in RAID5. I use HD-57s, one Raptor on each side of the HD57. It works perfectly no problems having the HDs fit. I use the right angle 10mm fittings and have no clearance issues. Hope this helped.

Cooling the entire product (lower than air) through its stock heat sink using an HD-57 or HD-60 might be doable since it uses the 3.5" format. But I would wonder about the overall efficiency of this caused by a series of heat transfer points, and the distance between the heat sources and actual liquid.

If you got a negative reply from Koolance, I think we probably assumed you would disassemble the 2.5" drive from the 3.5" stock heat sink and attempt to attach that to a water block. Our current HD products do not have ready mounting positions for 2.5" drives. You would need to find some way to keep the drive abutting the cooler.

This makes sense. The response wasn't negative, really. It was more of a "hmmm, we don't think / know if this is possible".

Your comment on efficiency also is interesting. You're right, the source of the heat is not near the actual heatsink.

I wonder if any of the liquid cooling companies are going to start offereing a solution for the 2.5" format VelociRaptors. They run very cool anyway but it is always nice to have options.

For those who are not familiar with the Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive and plan to purchase them, take note that there is two different types. Model #: WD3000GLFS is the older style that has the connections in the center of the drive and is known to cause some grief on certain configurations such as water cooling blocks and external enclosures. The main complaint is not having the ability to use them as swappable drives due to the fact that the connections do not match traditional SATA 3.5 drives. Model #: WD3000HLFS is the updated version that has connections matching traditional SATA drives that should take care of the previous problems encountered with the GLFS model. I use the HLFS model with my Koolance HD-60 cooling block and 1/4" Swivel Angled without any issues.

*Note* I did remove the mounting frame that came with the drive and made my own aluminum 3.5" custom mounting frame to match my MOD Design and also create better heat transfer to the Koolance HD-60. Unless you have the ability to create a better 3.5" mounting frame for your 2.5" VelociRaptor drive, I recommend you keep the drive stock and not use water cooling as it stays pretty cool as it is.

With SSD's just around the mainstream corner I would wonder if anyone will bother with watering them since they do indeed run cool. I have been toying with the idea of a SAS card & drives. They have became quite cheap and outperform the Velociraptors by a fairly large margin. I bounce back and forth though since the aforementioned SSD's are getting better and cheaper and have speeds that will blow away any conventional disks. If they can extend the write life the hard drives as we know them will be dead I think... :ugeek:

I already ran into the issue with the 2 different formats. Ordered a new 1U server for the office and the company we ordered through had sent the wrong format for the drives. They sent the older ones. I ended up keeping them anyways and just ordering 2 of the newer ones for the server and tossed the older format into my case at home.

FYI, SSD Drives, by the time you make or get an adapter for them, you have spent a bit of money, then water cool them. Mine has been running for about 3 months and with a case fan on it feels as cool as when I put it in. These things run cool from the start and man they are fast, just writing to them takes a shade longer than the read. This year OCZ is supposed to have a 1T out, that should lower the pricing for the rest. But, I remember a 30 MEG RLL encoded drive cost roughly the same as a 120 Gig now. :) BTW, the heat sink on my VelociRaptor and a case fan keeps it nice and cool.
