Overcomming Stressed Fittings

Postby bmanson25 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 8:51 am

I have completed an overhaul of my cooling loop and moved from pre-kitted products from another company to a system more or less made from scratch, not nearly as intimidating as I thought a few years back when I was working with the kits and I am loving the performance.

However a concern I have is the fitting I use such as the QD3 quick disconnects and swiveling angled fittings which are put under a little bit of a physical load by the tubing. One short segment with a slight bend in it for example stressed a disconnect enough that it leaked a little, I have also run into this with the 90 degree swiveling fittings. I think its okay now with some tweaking of the hose lengths, but disconnecting a 10" hose is a little tough due to the tight fit and still results in a little splash of coolant.

Any pointers for a DIY noob such as myself in preventing stressed fittings?

Thanks,

There are a bunch of things you can do, as you already found adjusting lengths of tubing can drastically change the stresses.

Proper angle of the fitting also makes a difference. If you a 45 would be a better fit and your using a 90 change to a 45 etc.

You can also plan out different routes, one order of components may require 90 fittings on almost every hook up but changing the order even slightly may allow for strait fittings instead.

Thanks for the advice! Its okay now but next time I replace my hoses I'm sure I'll run into it again if I don't change anything. I'll give the route change a shot, I think doing that will get me a little more length to provide a little slack when disconnecting them. Thanks again for the reply, much appreciated!
