CPU-350/345 with multiple blocks & EXOS 2.5

Postby Moose1974 » Fri Nov 21, 2008 8:15 am

I'm currently using a Danger Den TDX cpu block and am thinking of replacing it with either the CPU-350 or the CPU-345. I also have a Koolance VID-487X2 & a Danger Den X48 chipset block in the loop using 3/8" tubing. I'm using a EXOS 2.5 and am wondering is the pump strong enough to use the other 2 blocks and the new CPU-350 or would I have to use the less restrictive CPU-345? :?:

The Exos-2.5, or anything with our PMP-400 or PMP-450 pump can handle the CPU-350. The main exception might be if you were also using many different blocks (including RAM, HD), splitting significantly, etc. In that case, the CPU-345 could provide better performance.

Make sure you are using our liquid coolant and keeping a frequent eye on the coolant's color. I think you are probably mixing bare copper with the DD block (they don't plate them), and aluminum with the Exos radiator, which could cause corrosion.

Yes I am using the Koolance blue coolant however I didn't know having a bare copper block would cause corrosion. Why would it cause corrosion? :?: Well The DD TDX is getting pulled as soon as you guys release the CPU-350. I also have a brand new Koolance CHC-120 (discontinued) which I can replace the the DD X48 chipset block with. That should be ok right?

Aluminum and copper immersed in an electrolytic fluid (water) creates a chemical reaction called galvanic corrosion which causes the metal parts to literally be eaten away. Many metals react to one another this way and you can use anti-corrosive additives to combat this, like anti-freeze, but to be effective in the long run you need to keep up your fluid exchanges. This is the reason why I opted to replace my EXOS-2.5 aluminum radiator with an all copper/brass one so I can minimize any mixed metals in my loop(s).

The following pic is a result of that and also this is NOT a Koolance product.

Thanks for that info. So you replaced the radiator in the Exos 2.5? Which one did you get and how well did it fit?

I went with a Thermochill 360 radiator and it fit just fine but I needed to modify the aluminum sheet metal to accomodate the compression fittings and raised nozzle levels. If you don't feel comfortable cutting up the bottom and back plates then I don't recommend you do this. Also I voided my warranty by doing this but I am okay with it because I will take care of any issues myself. I am very resourceful :D

I'll post pics later next week of everything I did with my EXOS-2.5 modifications.

I just ordered the CPU-350! Can't wait for it to get here and install it and see how much my temps drop! :D

This is the old aluminum radiator compared to the new all copper one I installed.

This is the radiator installed with the modified bottom plate so the new compression fittings would work.

This is how I mounted the power connector to the back so I could still use it.

This is the unit installed completely from the back.

This is the system sitting on the floor and running great! I might add I haven't attached the thermal sensors so the readings show only ambient case temperatures at the moment.

Wow! Looks like a real clean mod. Good job! Did you get lower temps with the copper radiator than the stock aluminum one?

Also on the topic, I yanked out my DD-TDX cpu block and DD-X48 NB blocks. I installed the new CPU-350AC cpu block, CHC-120 NB block, and CHC-125 SB block. I also have a VID-487X2 in the loop. The CPU-350AC is the best block I've ever used! I've got 4 blocks in the loop and my CPU temp went down 10C !!!!!!!! Koolance rocks! :D
