VID-NX590X and GTX 590 fit problem

Postby sherpa21987 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 6:29 pm

Hi all,

I just installed my cooling block on my EVGA GTX 590. After installing (per instructions, i have used the gray pads on everything) i noticed that the chipset? on the card is not in contact with the thermal pad. Below is the reference image with the problem item circled.

What should I do? I havent put any washers in or anything yet i have just set the cooling block on top of the card...

Please help!!

ok so here is an update, i got my second gtx 590 out and here are the results... Same as before:

As you can see it is reference layout...

Got all the thermal pads in place, ready to install...

The problem is right in the center of the screen... its hard to see but there is about one pad thickness gap between the bridge chip and the thermal pad. note this is pre-tightening, however i could see that there would not be enough movement after tightening the blots to make any difference

as you can see the GPUs were making contact.

Installed a second pad... now the bridge makes contact.

so no one else has had this problem?

Sherpa,

It appears as though we're both using an eVGA GTX 590 Classified, so I pulled mine out of my system (thank you Quick Disconnects!) in order to check the area in question. My waterblock is making full contact with the chip you're having an issue with. Upon reassembly, I used 1 layer of grey padding in all required areas, the stock backplate with the original thermal pads, and the screws from Koolance without the washers. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Mine makes contact perfectly at that location but the screws included with my VID-NX590X did not fit the waterblock so I am using screws I bought that did including some of the screws from the side of the EVGA 590 GTX. Did either of you have issues with screws not fitting properly?

I'm installing the NX590 on the first of my two EVGA GTX 590 Classified cards.

I've done a trial fit after removing all the thermal compound on the card.

I am surprised at the size of the gaps showing between the processors and the plate surface as well as the individual gaps for the memory components.

Looking at the image above from Sherpa's teardown (http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/2131/imag0055xwq.jpg) you can see only the center of his processors are making any kind of contact with the water block (small smudged heat compound blob in the center of both processors). That can't be good or efficient for removing heat.

Can't we get some shorter standoffs that will narrow the gap a bit for a snug fit?

I don't want to put two of these things together get them installed and have to rip everything back out because the cards shut down due to overheating.

Are we all sure this much of a gap is the way it's supposed to be?

S.

For right now I think your best bet will be adding extra padding where its needed.

And now the NX590 has been discontinued?

What's that about?

Was it something I said?

It could be people were having trouble putting this block on and now they might go back and work on it and put a new version out.

Can you tell my what size screws fit the NX590X block? I have the EK backplate and want to change some of the screws to black so it matches.

Cheers.
