XFX 790i Ultra SLI- will CHC-125 fit under NX285?

Postby Demonicsoul » Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:37 pm

Heya been reading the forums for a month or so, while I work on my computer build. As the topic says that's the motherboard I have and I also have 2 XFX GTX 285 video cards. The question is I'm gonna be switching over to water cooling the entire system once I get it up and running and I've noticed that one of the GTX 285 covers the southbridge and sits very close to the southbridge being in its stock casing. Will the CHC-125 fit under the GTX 285 after I install the VID-NX285 waterblock?

Please see viewtopic.php?f=7&t=344&p=1723#p1596 for details on SB options.

Re: XFX or EVGA 790i Ultra SLI- will CHC-125 fit under NX285?

I just got my complete setup yesterday (including CPU345AT, CHC-125, CHC-122 and a couple voltage regulator blocks MVR-40's) and after a few hours I came to the conclusion there is just no way I could get the CHC-125 mounted under my XFX-9800GTX+. I had to get my computer up and running and am very happy with the CPU temp now at 39 Deg C but with two video cards in SLI mode, the SB looks like a problem. I put the stock coolers back on the EVGA 790i FTW digital MB and now they are running hotter than before, mostly I think because there is no fan on the CPU sucking air through the heatsinks. I don't want to take everything apart unless I am sure there is a solution. RMJ

to RMJohnson: i was wondering, i am thinking of getting the 790i ultra FTW and was wondering if you were able to get both of the voltage blocks that you have purchased on the mobo without any issues? and also if so, how'd you do it? i am here in iraq and think that my 780i has some issues now that i have no post what so ever after installing 2 water blocked gtx 275's in place of my 8800gts'. pretty sure that everything from my 780i will work on the new one, was also wondering if you would recommend an upgrade on the cooler, i have the CPU-340. thanks in advance

Just a thought... One of my systems uses the Asus M4N82 Deluxe and I am OC'ing the FSB and CPU so I did something a little unusual so that I could use partial water on the board. I pulled off the long heat pipe that covers the V-reg's, NB, and SB and put the V-reg's and NB on water but used a NB chipset heatsink and low profile fan from one of my older Socket A boards. This way I can water cool the higher heat producing parts but still run additional cards (in this case, two dual tuner HTPC cards, a RAID card, sound card, modem (for caller id), and of course the video card). If I remember right the south bridge only produces around 7-12 watts of heat which I believe is lower than the older north bridges used to. Someone correct me if I am wrong on the wattages.
All I know is that I have that system which has an AMD 955BE processor which is stock at 3.2ghz and I am running it at 3.8ghz and it stays right at 50c while folding 24/7. That's in a tiny HTPC case which are hard to keep cool anyway...
2 VID-NX295S
2 RP-1000
2 CHC-122
AMD 955BE, 6 250gb in RAID0, 8GB OCZ Flex 1200, 2 EVGA GTX295 FTW's. Loop 1: CPU & quad GPU's. Loop 2: PS to 120mm to NB/SB/Vreg's to dual 80mm rad/fans
