120mm - 140mm fan adapters are too thick

Postby wpegg » Sun Apr 14, 2013 11:28 am

Guys,

I'm trying posting on a few forums to work this out, however no-one is coming back to me. I bought a Koolance 140mm - 120mm fan adapter, in order to step down a corsair h110 to fit in a corsair 800d. The problem is that the adapter is 5mm thick, so the screws don't reach through to the radiator. Surely this has been encountered before? I must have missed something, could someone explain how I'm meant to use these adapters? I can't imagine any system where there's 5mm give on the screw length, so somethings not right.

I'd really appreciate any response,

Regards,
Will

There have been a couple 120-140 adapters for different things. Can you be more specific with a part number/model number?

Thankyou for replying, I was going to link to the part, but was worried it would be classed as spam.

I bought 2 of these: http://koolance.com/120mm-to-140mm-bracket-adapter

Any help would be useful, even if it is just the dimensions and specifications of the screws I need to get hold of to get this working.

So looking at that if you look at the product description and the hardware that is included, then at the BKT-HX001 that it is intended for.

I believe how that plate is supposed to be mounted in on the outside of the case using the short screws from the inside to secure the plate to the case. Then using the stand-offs to mount the BKT-HX001 to the plate that is now secured to the case. This would explain why the screws are short as you would not want them to go through the plate fully.

If you taking 2 of these and trying to mount them to a radiator, then taking it and mounting it to the top of the 800D it won't work without drilling as the holes won't line up. The distance between the 120mm fan holes will be too much. You would either need to drill new holes in the top of the 800D, or you would need to drill offset holes in the plates to bring the 120mm mountings closer together then thread them with a tap and die set.

Anyways the screws are most likely M4 threading but for length you will need to measure them.

Thanks,

So it seems I bought the wrong adapters? I need thinner ones. I knew I'd need to drill some holes, I've got them all worked out. I just needed to know how to get the adapter onto the radiator. It sounds like I bought a very specific adapter by mistake, I thought it was something more generic. I'll probably get hold of a thinner adapter then, and use that, it sounds like it would be cheaper than getting custom screws...

A small pack of M4 machine screws from your local hardware store in the correct length is probably $2 at most, it is not an uncommon threading. If you take a screw with you they can even confirm the threading.

M4 screws are indeed easy to obtain. However Corsair have been kind enough to use 6/32 screws, which after walking to all hardware stores in a 2 mile radius, I can confirm are simply not obtainable in the UK.
