Radiator Copper core etc.

Postby Apples » Sat Oct 01, 2016 12:01 am

I am having trouble figuring out what metal various radiators use in relation to not wanting to mix certain metals. For example:

I see this description - HX-CU1320V is a low profile copper core radiator designed for four 120mm fans.

I then see this warning: Do not use aluminum with bare (unplated) copper or bare (unplated) brass in the same system. Do not use silver with nickel in the same system.

Under specification, I then see: Materials: Brass/Copper

Where is the brass? Where is the copper? Is it unplated? I assume it is unplated, but if it was plated, how would I know?

What about-
http://koolance.com/fitting-single-comp ... -v10x16-bk

I see: Materials- Brass, EPDM

A quick google search show that EPDM is just the rubber gasket.

Is the brass unplated for this compression fitting?

For this cold plate, it is much more obvious. http://koolance.com/cold-plate-25mm-plt-un25f

Under specifications is says: Materials- Nickel-Plated Copper, Nickel-Plated Brass, EPDM

I gather that nickel would be the only metal to come in contact with the liquid.

Maybe it would help if the description for products could describe what metal would be coming into contact with the liquid.

One more thing that confusers me is the statement: Do not use silver with nickel in the same system. What if it had copper plated silver for some strange reason. Would it still be bad? I understand they are probably talking about the use silver kill coils. Or maybe my definition of system is a little off. Maybe only metals that come into contact with the liquid are considered part of the system, but the thing is, I don't know. It is unclear to me, so I am asking. Please help. Thank you for your time.

It only applies to what the liquid touches... copper plated silver for example mean that the liquid would never touch the silver.

The fittings your linked for example are not raw brass because brass isn't black like that, so in theory the liquid is only ever touching the black material (paint, electroplating I'm not sure)
